Gena Rowlands, acclaimed actor from ‘A Woman Under the Influence,’ ‘The Notebook,’ has
INDIAN WELLS, California — Gena Rowlands, an Emmy-winning and Oscar-nominated actor who had a groundbreaking performance in “A Woman Under the Influence” and a major role in her son’s film “The Notebook,” has died at the age of 94, reports say.
Variety reports Rowlands’ death was confirmed by the office of her son’s agent. Rowlands reportedly had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.
Rowlands was nominated for the Oscar for best actress twice, for her roles in “A Woman Under the Influence” (1974) and “Gloria” (1980). Both films were collaborations with her late actor-director husband, John Cassavetes, with whom she worked on 10 films, including “Minnie and Moskowitz” in 1971, “Opening Night” in 1977 and “Love Streams” in 1984.
Although she didn’t win the Oscar for “A Woman Under the Influence,” many of her contemporaries, including the late Peter Falk, hailed the performance as a wife and mother cracking under the burden of domestic harmony as one of the best of all time.
“Heartbreaking news. My favorite actress of all time Gena Rowlands has passed away,” actor Saverio Guerra said in a post on social media. “There will never be another, don’t even try to convince me.”
In addition to the Oscar nominations, Rowlands earned three Primetime Emmy Awards, one Daytime Emmy and two Golden Globes. She was awarded an honorary Academy Award in 2015 in recognition of her work and legacy in Hollywood. “You know what’s wonderful about being an actress? You don’t just live one life,” she said at the podium. “You live many lives.”
“Gena Rowlands was the type of actor who was universally admired by others actors, as well as moviegoers,” movie critic Richard Roeper said on social media. “What a blazing talent. Thank you for all the great work.”
Rowlands was born on June 19, 1930, in Madison, Wisconsin. NPR reports studied acting at the American Academy of the Dramatic Arts in New York, where she met Cassavetes. They were married in 1954 and remained together until his death in 1989.
“He had a particular sympathetic interest in women and their problems in society, how they were treated and how they solved and overcame what they needed to, so all his movies have some interesting women, and you don’t need many,” Rowlands told the Associated Press in 2015.
After her husband’s death, she worked on several projects with her children, including “The Notebook” in 2004, which was directed by her son, Nick Cassavetes, according to Variety. She also was in “Broken English” (2007), a film written and directed by her daughter, Zoe Cassavetes.
