Puppy in Upstate tests positive for rabies

GAFFNEY, S.C. (FOX Carolina) – The South Carolina Department of Public Health said two rabies cases were recently confirmed, including one in the Upstate.

A 4-month-old puppy in Cherokee County tested positive for rabies. The puppy was found near Union Highway and Stephenson Street in Gaffney.

Officials said the puppy began showing symptoms of rabies three weeks after exposure to a skunk.

Three people were exposed and are seeking medical attention. Another dog was also exposed and is being quarantined as required by the South Carolina rabies control act.

A raccoon also tested positive for rabies in Berkely County.

Officials urged pet owners to make sure animals are up-to-date on vaccinations.

“Rabies virus can be present in the saliva of infected dogs, cats, and ferrets during illness and even several days before clinical signs develop. The rabies virus is found in the saliva of infected animals and can be transmitted through a bite, scratch, broken skin, and the mucous membranes of your eyes, nose, or mouth. Immediately wash the affected area with plenty of soap and water,” said Terri McCollister, Rabies Program director. “Contact your local Public Health office for further guidance.”
