Washington Commanders spark NFL free agency frenzy after releasing Pro Bowler Jonathan

Defensive tackle Jonathan Allen is reportedly being released by the Washington Commanders.

The two-time Pro Bowler is expected to be one of the most coveted defensive tackles on the market ahead of the 2025 season.

According to ESPN, the Commanders informed Allen of their decision on Friday, with the 30-year-old lineman being allowed to hit free agency early.

Allen was selected by Washington in the first round of the 2017 draft and has spent his entire professional career in the nation’s capital.

The former Alabama star, who stands at 6ft 3ins and 300lbs, played in 11 games in the 2024 season as the Commanders reached the NFC Championship game.

Allen signed a four-year, $72million contract extension with the Commanders back in 2021. It included an average salary of $18m a year with $35.6m guaranteed.

The decision to cut Allen comes after the Commanders failed to find a trade partner for the defensive tackle.

Earlier this month, ESPN reports, the 30-year-old was given permission to find a trade after Washington decided not to new his contract. The move saves the team $16.3m in cap space.

Elsewhere, it was reported on Friday that Myles Garrett has issued a threat to the Cleveland Browns ownership amid his trade war with the franchise.

Last month, the defensive star demanded a trade but the Browns aren’t prepared to let their best player walk without a fight.

With the two sides locked in a standoff, Garrett reportedly requested to meet with owner Jimmy Haslam, according to ESPN.

However, the Browns are said to be refusing to even discuss the possibility of trading Garrett and in response, the defensive end has issued a threat.

Garrett is reportedly prepared to miss games in Cleveland next season if his wish isn’t granted.
