Beastie Boys fans stunned to learn the real meaning of band’s name more than 40 years

They are undoubtedly one of the most influential rap rock bands in history, but even die-hard fans of the Beastie Boys have been left stunned to learn that the group’s name is actually an acronym.

The hip hop group, who hailed from New York, was composed of guitarist Adam ‘Ad Rock’ Horovitz (guitar), Adam ‘MCA’ Yauch (bass) and Michael ‘Mike D’ Diamond (drums) for the majority of their history.

However, the band originally formed as a four-piece hardcore punk band named The Young Aborigines in 1978.

It was comprised of Michael Diamond (vocals), John Berry (guitar), Yauch (bass) and Kate Schellenbach (drums).

Berry eventually left the group, before Schellenbach was fired in 1983 and then Ad Rock was recruited to join.

After releasing seven platinum-selling albums and becoming the third rap band to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, fans are still having their ‘mind blown’ by the real meaning of their name.

In a 2007 interview with Charlie Rose, MCA had revealed that a founding band member named John Berry had been the one to suggest the name ‘Beastie Boys.’

It was that suggestion which inspired MCA to then create the acronym, Boys Entering Anarchistic States Towards Inner Excellence.

Fans have been stunned to realize that BEASTIE was an acronym thanks to the 2020 Apple TV documentary, Beastie Boys Story.

One music lover tweeted: ‘Mind blown! Finally watching Apple TV Beastie Boys’ doc. BEASTIE name is actually an ACRONYM… Whaaa Boys. Entering. Anarchistic. States. Towards. Inner. Excellence omg.’

Another wrote: ‘Just found out the “Beastie” in Beastie Boys is an acronym for Boys Entering Anarchistic States Towards Internal Excellence. Love them even more.’

‘Who doesn’t love a class #acronym – BEASTIE – Boys Entering Anarchistic States Towards Inner Excellence.’

One fan couldn’t help but point out an issue with the name as they tweeted: ‘Also I think that the Beastie Boys’ name is funny because it’s an acronym that has the word “boys” in it already.’

Not all music lovers appear to like the name as one person tweeted: ‘Settling on a band name was one of the hardest parts of forming one. I tend to like single word names.

‘One of the worst ever is Beastie Boys, but their music would not be denied. An acronym for Boys Entering Anarchistic States Towards Inner Excellence… super dumb.’

Opening up about the name to Jimmy Fallon in 2018, Mike D stated: ‘Boys Entering Anarchistic States Towards Inner Excellence. And, yes, it was a stupid name.

‘What’s funny, here we are… We’re supposed to be grown-a** men and it’s still the name of the band.’

During their career, the Beastie Boys won several awards including three Grammys and are widely considered as one of the most legendary hip-hop acts of all-time.

The band are known for smash hits such as Sabotage, (You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party!), Intergalactic and No Sleep Till Brooklyn.

Back in 2012, Yauch died at the age of 47 after being diagnosed with cancer in 2009.

In October 2018, Mike D and Ad-Rock released a memoir, Beastie Boys Book, recounting events throughout the group’s history.

The book was adapted into the Apple TV documentary in April 2020, directed by Spike Jonze.

The book and documentary were also complemented by the compilation album Beastie Boys Music, released in October 2020.

Their influence is still seen in various ways including NFL star Travis Kelce’s tradition belting out ‘Fight for Your Right.’

The Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis sang the tune after winning at least three AFC titles his team have claimed in the 2020, 2022, and 2023 seasons.

He did the same thing after winning Super Bowl LVII.
