Celebrity hair stylist for A-listers like Miley Cyrus and JLo shares insider secrets
When it comes to red carpet glam, few names carry as much weight as Sally Hershberger.
The 64-year-old legendary hairstylist from Kansas – who was behind Meg Ryan’s iconic 90s choppy shag – has spent decades setting trends rather than following them.
With a client list that includes everyone from Miley Cyrus to Jennifer Lopez, Sally is certainly a hair icon.
She was the first stylist in New York City to charge $600 for a haircut – her rates now hover around $800 – and her signature styles are still in high demand.
DailyMail.com spoke exclusively with Sally to get the inside scoop ahead of fashion’s biggest night: the Met Gala, which is set to take place on Monday, May 5.
She has been in the hair styling business since the early 2000s and said working with big celebrities is ‘stimulating’ and ‘exhilarating.’
‘It’s very special to be around all those different types of people – from Jill Biden to Miley Cyrus to Hillary Clinton and JLo,’ she explained.
‘My clientele is so versatile. I’m super lucky that I can cross-pollinate across the board.

‘I get to meet incredible people, from the governor of New York to Kendall Jenner and Kris Jenner.
‘It’s exciting to be around so many different creative and successful people. It’s a privilege because where else could you meet all these people unless you were famous yourself and going to parties every night?’
Sally, who helped style many stars for past Met Galas, said her favorite of her Met Gala looks was that of model Pixie Geldof.
‘I gave her a Pixie cut, and that really stood out to me. I’ve done so many models for the Met Gala, but that one is definitely a favorite,’ she detailed.
Despite being known for Meg’s classic cut, Sally has also been cutting actress Lisa Rinna’s hair for many years.
‘Lisa has been getting that cut for so many years. It originally started with Meg Ryan, but Lisa has now made it iconic herself.
‘She has never wavered from that haircut – she’ll wear wigs, but she keeps it.’
Sally continued: ‘The secret? I created that look, and it just evolved over time.

‘I had already trained all my protégés in that haircut before she even came to me. She was trying to get in with me for a long time! It’s just something I know how to do.’
Sally has also dappled in hair for political figures such as former First Lady Jill.
The hairstylist did her hair for both Jill’s 2021 and 2024 Vogue cover shoots.
‘The first time, we went to the White House, which is always exciting. It’s a thrill to be inside those rooms,’ Sally told DailyMail.com.
‘She’s such a lovely person – very down-to-earth and approachable. You’re with the First Lady and the President of the United States; it doesn’t get better than that!’
Sally also broke down some hairstyles that she found can be ‘too much’ and unflattering.
‘I don’t love waist-long hair – it just gets to be too much,’ she explained. ‘And hair that looks obviously bought, where you can tell it’s fake, is never a good look.’

In addition, she said she wasn’t a ‘fan of overly structured or choppy haircuts that feel outdated.’
‘Long hair can also go wrong when it looks obviously fake or overly processed, especially when it’s stringy and lacks dimension,’ Sally continued.
The celebrity hairstylist also revealed the cuts that she believes can age you – calling out one popstar in her answer.
‘Short hairdos and 1950s hairstyles. Sabrina Carpenter’s current long, Barbarella-style hair is a very aging hairstyle – it’s a very done, roller-set look,’ she dished.
‘They once put ’50s hairdos on people like JLo, and they instantly looked older.’
Instead, Sally recommended a few ways you can use your hair to make yourself look younger.
‘Hair that moves! Hair that’s not too dark,’ the hair expert recommended.
‘When hair is really dark and inky, it can be aging.
‘You want movement, body, and shine – healthy, dimensional hair will make you look much younger.’
The hairstylist said she had some exciting projects coming up, but they were a ‘secret.’
