The show has previously starred Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson in season one, Colin Farrell and Rachel McAdams in season two, Mahershala Ali in season three, and Jodie Foster in season four.
Nic Pizzolatto created the series and served as the showrunner for the first three seasons.
After his departure, Issa López took over for the fourth season, Night Country.
She is set to return as the writer and showrunner for season five.
Last year True Detective fans were left in awe of the fourth season’s finale.
The series, starring Jodie and Kali Reis as Detectives Liz Danvers and Evangeline Navarro, was hailed for its ‘superb acting’.
Set in Alaska, the season followed an investigation into the disappearance of eight researchers at a remote government base on the ice.
Jodie was singled out for particular praise for her character’s role in the final episode of season four, which is subtitled True Detective: Night Fiction.

The positive reaction to season four of True Detective comes after fans were initially critical following its return.
After episode one, which aired last month, viewers took to X to vent their frustration with what they felt was an over-reliance on CGI.
Season 3 was about two Arkansas detectives investigating a child disappearance in the 1980s, with the case resurfacing and haunting them decades later.
Season 2 followed three law enforcement officials and a career criminal as they navigated a massive web of corruption, following the murder of a city manager in California.
The original True Detective in 2014 was one of the most admired crime thrillers ever screened.
Its combination of Deep South voodoo strangeness and police procedural, matched with career-best performances from Woody and Matthew, was deemed exceptional by fans.

The premise of the movie is: ‘A man returns to the idyllic beach of his childhood to surf with his son.’
‘When he is humiliated by a group of locals, the man is drawn into a conflict that keeps rising and pushes him to his breaking point,’ per an official IMDB synopsis.
After the film was shown at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival last May, The Guardian reviewed the movie and gave it four out of five stars.
Author Xan Brooks for the outlet labeled the project as ‘a pleasing, no-frills intensity’ and added, ‘It’s a low-budget, hard-hitting comic bruiser of a picture: a midlife-crisis movie dressed up as a 1970s exploitation flick.’
