Live updates: Trump arrives for talks with Starmer at UK prime minister’s country home |

Police officers stand on duty at a temporary permeter fence erected on the Long Walk, leading to Windsor Castle, ahead of US President Donald Trump's state visit.

British authorities will not make public the cost of US President Donald Trump’s second state visit for some time. But the cost of his first state visit sheds some light on the bill the British state has to foot for these big set-piece events.

Trump’s previous state visit in 2019 cost the UK around 3.9 million pounds ($5.3 million).

Most of that was spent on policing. London’s Metropolitan Police spent around 3.4 million pounds on the visit, with more than 6,300 officers deployed, British media reported at the time.

The rest of the tab was paid by the UK Foreign Office. Nearly 100,000 pounds was spent on entertainment, with around 32,000 pounds spent on accommodation and 33,000 pounds on transportation.

Unlike in 2019, Trump is spending hardly any time in London. During his first visit, Trump was received at Buckingham Palace, in the heart of the capital. This time, he is being kept at more of a distance from the British public. While thousands protested in London against Trump’s visit on Wednesday, far fewer had flocked to Windsor, where he was staying.

A long-term investment: The overall cost, though, will be dwarfed by the amount of investment in Britain that US companies have announced to mark Trump’s second visit.

The British government announced yesterday that it had secured 150 billion pounds ($205 billion) of investment from US companies, which it hopes will create more than 7,600 jobs.
