Government Shutdown News: Trump Says No Food Aid Until Reopening; Petition to Release
President Trump has spent much of the day posting messages of support for various Republicans, threatening to withhold food assistance until the government shutdown is over, and calling on lawmakers to end the filibuster in the Senate. And just now he has weighed in on tomorrow’s oral arguments at the Supreme Court, which will consider the legality of his use of emergency powers to impose tariffs.
“Tomorrow’s United States Supreme Court case is, literally, LIFE OR DEATH for our Country,” Trump wrote, using his characteristic mix of regular text and all-capital letters for emphasis.
A victory for the Trump administration would be a victory for financial and national security for the U.S., Trump said, while a defeat would mean “we are virtually defenseless against other Countries who have, for years, taken advantage of us.”
Also this afternoon, the White House issued an executive order from Trump formally lowering a fentanyl-related tariff on goods from China to 10% from 20% as of Nov. 10. That was part of the U.S.-China trade deal.
