Ericka Alneus, city councillor for Montreal’s Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie borough, has been named interim leader of Projet Montréal, following a unanimous election by caucus.

She will serve as opposition leader at Montreal’s city hall. She takes over from Luc Rabouin, who resigned after losing the city’s mayoral race on Nov. 2.

In a news statement published on Wednesday, Alneus said she is ready to bring her team together and work for Montreal’s democracy.

“I am moved by this show of confidence from my colleagues,” she said. “The challenges are great in the metropolis, and our team will live up to the mandate entrusted to it by the people.”

Alneus’s career in politics started in 2021, when she ran with Projet Montréal for city councillor in the Étienne-Desmarteau district of Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie. She won her seat in the district by 3,600 votes on Nov. 2.

She was most recently responsible for culture, heritage, gastronomy and nightlife on the city’s executive committee.
