OPHELIA YOUNG WITH WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT TONIGHT. AFTER MORE THAN A YEAR WITH THE DOORS CLOSED, ONE OF SACRAMENTO’S BELOVED ICE CREAM SHOPS IS OFFICIALLY BACK OPEN. TODAY. VIC’S ICE CREAM OPENED ITS DOORS AND WAS MET WITH LARGE CROWDS. THAT’S WHERE WE FIND KCRA 3’S CORTEZ LIVE FROM VIC’S ICE CREAM. SO NOT THE BEST ICE CREAM WEATHER TODAY. BUT HOW ARE THE CROWDS LOOKING OUT THERE? I’LL TELL YOU WHAT, CECIL. I ASKED A KID. HE WAS THE FIRST IN LINE SIXTH GRADER. I TOLD HIM, HEY, ISN’T IT A LITTLE TOO COLD FOR SOME ICE CREAM? AND SAYS IT’S ALWAYS TIME FOR ICE CREAM. HE WOKE UP AT SEVEN IN THE MORNING AND WAITED OUTSIDE IN THE COLD UNTIL 930 OR 930 IN THE MORNING TO GET IN. BUT THIS IS A STAPLE IN THE COMMUNITY, RIGHT? IF YOU’RE FROM SACRAMENTO, YOU’VE BEEN HERE TO VIC’S AT LEAST ONCE. I REMEMBER AS A KID COMING AFTER A POP WARNER FOOTBALL GAME AND GETTING THE COOKIES AND CREAM HERE, AND IT WAS TO DIE FOR, YOU KNOW? BUT EVEN THOUGH IT WAS CLOSED FOR MORE THAN A YEAR, PEOPLE FOUND EVEN WITH THE COLD WEATHER, TO GET ICE CREAM ON THEIR LIST. ON OPENING DAY, YOU DON’T NEED A SIGN TO TELL YOU FIX IS BACK. AFTER CLOSING DOWN FOR MORE THAN A YEAR, THE LINE WRAPPED EARLY. WE MOVED ABOUT 30FT FROM WHERE THE LINE STARTED. I’M HOPING TO GET IN BY WEDNESDAY. THE ROOM FILLED FAST AND THE FIRST SCOOP WENT TO THE NEXT GENERATION OF CUSTOMERS. WE WERE HERE LIKE 930, SO WE WAITED LIKE AN HOUR AND A HALF. VIC’S ICE CREAM FIRST OPENED ITS DOORS IN 1947 BY ASH RUTLEDGE AND VIC SOTTO, QUICKLY BECOMING A LANDMARK STAPLE. ALL THE NEIGHBORHOOD KIDS CAME, YOU KNOW? SO I STARTED COMING HERE WELL OVER 50 YEARS AGO. OVER 60. WELL, WE’LL STOP THERE. I CAN REMEMBER THE KIDS ARGUING ABOUT WHO WAS GOING TO GET THE FIRST SCOOP OF ICE CREAM WHEN THEY GOT HERE. FIRST DATES FOR SCOOPS, FIRST JOBS. IT WAS THE FIRST JOB FOR A LOT OF PEOPLE. I WISH I’D HAD ONE HERE, BUT I WOULD HAVE LEARNED HOW TO MAKE EVERYTHING. BUT AFTER THE DEATH OF CRAIG RUTLEDGE IN 2024, THE FUTURE HERE WENT QUIET UNTIL THE DOORS OPENED AGAIN AND THE MEMORIES THAT CAME WITH THEM. WHY DID YOU BRING YOUR FAMILY HERE TODAY? I WORKED HERE 30 YEARS AGO. REALLY? SO I WE’VE BEEN COMING HERE A LONG TIME. I HAD UNCLES THAT WORKED HERE, COUSINS THAT WORKED HERE. CRAIG RUTLEDGE, THE PREVIOUS OWNER, GAVE ME MY FIRST JOB HERE WHEN I WAS 13. WORKED HERE ALL THROUGH HIGH SCHOOL. I LOVED THIS PLACE. I’VE BEEN COMING BACK WITH MY FAMILY SINCE THEN, AND ACTUALLY MY WIFE CAME IN AND I WAS WORKING WHEN SHE FIRST MET ME HERE. WOW. YEAH, LONG TIME AGO. AND NOW MY DAUGHTER, HER BEST. ONE OF HER GOOD FRIENDS, MY SON, AND THEN ANOTHER, HIS GOOD FRIEND. ALL THANKS TO VIC’S. YEP. THAT’S JUST THE TESTAMENT OF HOW VIC’S IS. YOU COULD FIND YOUR NEXT WIFE HERE AT THIS ICE CREAM SHOP. IT WAS SOLD TO SOME LOCAL SACRAMENTANS THAT WERE TRYING TO PRESERVE THIS ICE CREAM SHOP, AND THEY DID A GREAT JOB WITH THAT. KEEPING THE CHECKERED FLOOR THE SAME. THEY GOT THE COUNTER THE SAME. I KID YOU NOT, GUYS, WE’VE BEEN HERE SINCE 11 IN THE MORNING AND THE LINE IS STILL OUT THE DOOR. SO IT TELLS YOU HOW MUCH IT MEANS TO THIS COMMUNITY AND THE FACT THAT IT’S BACK DURING WINTER DOESN’T MATTER. IT’S ALWAYS TIME FOR SOME ICE CREAM. BACK TO YOU, CECIL. IT IS ALWAYS TIME FOR SOME ICE CREAM. SO? SO, DENTON, I GOT TO ASK YOU THOUGH, ARE YOU GETTING A SCOOP BEFORE YOU GO? AND IF YOU ARE, WE ARE TAKING ORDERS BACK HERE. I JUST WANT YOU TO KNOW THAT I’LL BRING OUT THE PAPER AND THE PEN AND I’LL JOT YOURS DOWN. THEY HAVE SOME REALLY GOOD MILKSHAKES. I WAS ALWAYS JUST PLAIN VANILLA, BUT, YOU KNOW, THEY HAVE, YOU KNOW, STRAWBERRY COFFEE FLAVOR. SO LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU WANT AND ALL THE PRODUCERS, AND I’LL GET A LIST GOING. I’LL EVEN GET
Vic’s Ice Cream in Sacramento’s Land Park reopens Saturday after ownership change, renovations
Vic’s Ice Cream in Sacramento reopened on Saturday under new ownership and promises “classic Vic’s flavors.”The line went out the door and wrapped around the 1940s establishment for its grand reopening. The beloved Land Park ice cream and sandwich shop on Riverside Boulevard was started in 1947 and closed following the death of owner Craig Rutledge last March. The shop was co-founded by Rutledge’s father, Ash, and his friend Vic Zito.”I grew up, originally just a couple of blocks from here,” Rick Stevenson from the Land Park Volunteer Corps said. “So I started coming here, well, over 50 years ago.” Vic’s was later sold to “a new generation of Sacramento locals who grew up coming here and are committed to keeping its legacy alive,” according to its website. The new owners have shared renovation updates on social media. The business said it needed to modernize electrical and plumbing systems but would keep the overall aesthetic in place, including Vic’s checkerboard floor and classic soda fountain counter and stools. Vic’s has said it is also keeping the same ice cream recipes, along with its red sauce and lime rickeys that have been a favorite over the decades.”Look at the line and when you see the line, you can just see the number of people who just came back for the grand reopening. They’ve been waiting for this for a long time and I’m excited for them,” District 7 Councilmember Rick Jennings said.See more coverage of top California stories here | Download our app | Subscribe to our morning newsletter | Find us on YouTube here and subscribe to our channel
